Email counselling, or sometimes also called Email Therapy, is a type of counselling and therapy that is text based. The service is flexible and accessible and all you need is a personal email address to send and receive. This can support when it is difficult to access counselling in a more traditional way. You get to be in control, choosing when, how much and how often to email so you are not tied in any way and can stop at any time.
Sometimes, opening up to family and friends, does not feel right for you. Email counselling can work because you can type about your concerns, feelings and experiences and send your email at a time which suits you. Typing out what is happening for you, sending it to a qualified and registered counsellor, means you receive a therapeutic counselling response which is tailored to you, and it can be a bit like letter writing. It can help when you are feeling embarrassed or shy, too anxious to be online or via the phone, you are struggling with energy levels and by having a counsellor that you choose, means that you maintain your anonymity if you wish to, which may work for you at this time. I have experience of therapeutic writing through my previous work, and alongside my training.
How does Email Counselling work?
1. Email counselling, similar to all counselling, is about what works best for you. You can use an email address you already have, however if you wish and by emails are secure and no one else has access to your email, you have an option to set up a free proton.me email address if this is something you may wish to do so it works for you. You can find information how to do this by clicking here.
2. Sometimes it can be hard to know where to start, things can feel jumbled up and overwhelming and it is okay to share as much or as little as you wish, and email it to valattherapeuticcamper@proton.me. This is a separate secure email account solely for clients who wish to use email counselling.
3. Once received, I will email back to let you know I have received it, information to pay which is £45.00 via BACS, and once payment is received, I will spend at least an hour composing my full response to you, and you will receive my response within 7 days. I have experience as a client and a counsellor for email counselling and this set up is based on those expectations. If you have not received a response, please can I trouble you to check your junk email folder, as unfortunately emails can sometimes be diverted.
Email counselling can support if you need to talk or are looking for something to change, rather than a crisis service. If you are feeling unsafe and need immediate support, click here or at the bottom of our home page here.
